Let the silence sit there

You've gone a couple days without narrating your work.

Key takeaways

  • Finish the task and leave the room without announcing it
  • Count to ten before filling a quiet gap
  • Let praise arrive late or not at all

TL;DR

You've gone a couple days without narrating your work. Now comes the part nobody warns you about: the quiet after, and how badly your mouth wants to fill it.

Sit in the quiet

Nobody noticed. Nobody said anything. And something in you starts reaching for a way to bring it up sideways, casual, like you're not bringing it up at all.

Catch the sideways mention

It never comes out as bragging. It comes out as a complaint about how long it took. A joke about being tired. A question you already know the answer to, aimed so somebody has to ask what you were up to. That's the same hunger wearing a work shirt. You did the thing. The reaching is what's left over, and it's loud when the room goes still.

Let it go unpaid

Here's the hard math. Some of what you do will never get counted by anyone. Not misunderstood, not undervalued. Just unseen, and that's the end of it. A man who can't stand that will keep finding ways to collect, and he'll spend his life handing the bill to people who didn't order anything. Let one go unpaid today. See if you survive. You will.

Say it to yourself once

Before you sleep, say it out loud, one time, to nobody: "I did it and it was good." Then stop. No elaboration, no review of who should have noticed. One sentence, then quiet. That's not a trick to feel better. That's practice in being a man whose worth doesn't need a witness in the room.

Today

When the quiet comes after you finish something, let it stay quiet and go do the next thing.

Go deeper

The reaching comes from a real place. You want to know you're worth something, and you keep asking rooms that can't answer. Paul had men measuring his work in public and he set the scale aside entirely: "It is the Lord who judges me." (1 Corinthians 4:4) That's not a man dodging the review. That's a man who already got the verdict and stopped taking appeals. If you're counted righteous before you've done anything, then the silence after good work costs you nothing. Let it sit there. The books are closed and they came out in your favor.

Remember Yesterday

Let the work speak later. Finish one thing today and let the whole day end without mentioning it to anyone.

Remember Lasterday

Stop narrating your own work. Pick one task today, work it start to finish with your phone face down, and tell no one until it's done.

Keep exploring

Work without checking the mirror. Pick one task today and when you notice yourself stepping outside it to watch, say the task's next step out loud and get back in.
