Let the work speak later

Good work has a long shelf life.

Key takeaways

  • Finish the task before you decide who hears about it
  • Answer questions about your work in one plain sentence
  • Let a good result sit a full day unmentioned

TL;DR

Good work has a long shelf life. You don't have to sell it on the day it's done.

Let it sit unmentioned

You stopped narrating while you worked. Now comes the harder part, the hours after, when the thing is finished and nobody noticed and your mouth wants to help them notice.

Watch the hour after

The counter is wiped. The report is sent. The shelf is level. Nobody says a word. So you start setting the table for it. You mention how late you were up. You leave the receipt where someone will see. You ask a question you already know the answer to so the subject comes around to you.

None of that is evil. It's just hunger showing up in a cheap outfit. And it shortens the life of the work. A thing you announce gets judged once, fast, and forgotten. A thing you leave alone gets found, and what gets found gets trusted.

Answer plain when asked

Silence isn't the goal. Being asked and answering straight is the goal. Someone says, who handled this. You say, that was me. Full stop. No history of the obstacles. No list of who didn't help. No joke that reopens the floor so you can keep talking.

One sentence, then let the room move on. Practice the sentence tonight if you need to: "Yeah, that was mine." That's it. You'd be surprised how much weight a man carries who can say that and then shut up.

Today

Finish one thing today and let the whole day end without mentioning it to anyone.

Go deeper

There's a longer view here. "Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time. wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the hearts. At that time each will receive their praise from God." 1 Corinthians 4:5. Praise is coming, from someone who saw the whole thing, including the parts you'd be tempted to oversell. That means the record doesn't depend on your reporting. You're free to let the work stand there unexplained, because the final account isn't being kept by the people in the room.

Remember Yesterday

Stop narrating your own work. Pick one task today, work it start to finish with your phone face down, and tell no one until it's done.

Read it

Remember Lasterday

Work without checking the mirror. Pick one task today and when you notice yourself stepping outside it to watch, say the task's next step out loud and get back in.

Read it

Keep exploring

Take the compliment plainly. The next time someone tells you that you did something well, say thank you and nothing else.
