Stop narrating your own work

Most men don't just work.

Key takeaways

  • Delete the post you were drafting in your head
  • Work ten minutes with no running commentary
  • Tell the story only after the job is done

TL;DR

Most men don't just work. They work and run commentary on the work at the same time, building the version they'll tell later. That second job eats the first one.

Drop the running commentary

You've felt it. Halfway through something ordinary, part of you is already drafting the caption, the text, the line you'll drop at dinner. The task gets done at sixty percent while the narration gets your best effort.

Catch the second voice

It sounds reasonable. It sounds like motivation. Been up since five. Nobody else would bother with this. Could put this on the feed. That voice isn't helping you work. It's billing you for the work and spending the payment early. You get tired from the telling, not the doing. Then you stop, and the thing is half finished, and you're strangely worn out with nothing to show. Notice what happens to your hands while the voice talks. They slow down. They get sloppy. They're waiting for the story to catch up.

Finish before you tell it

Simple rule. The job goes first, the telling goes after. If it's worth saying, it'll still be worth saying in an hour. Most of it won't be, and that's the useful part of the test. You'll find half of what you planned to announce was never really for anyone but the voice. Keep the phone face down. Keep the group chat closed. When you catch yourself composing, say the next physical step out loud and do that instead. Sand the second coat. Call the vendor. Load the dishwasher.

Today

Pick one task today, work it start to finish with your phone face down, and tell no one until it's done.

Go deeper

There's an old warning about doing good work so people will watch you do it, and the line lands hard: "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 6:1). Read it plainly. The reward gets spent at the point of display. Narrate it and you've already collected. Work it quietly and something is still owed to you, still growing. That's not a rule about humility. That's an accounting fact about where your effort lands.

Remember Yesterday

Work without checking the mirror. Pick one task today and when you notice yourself stepping outside it to watch, say the task's next step out loud and get back in.

Read it

Remember Lasterday

Keep working with no audience. Find the part of today's work nobody will ever inspect and do it to the same standard as the part they will.

Read it

Keep exploring

Say nothing when they don't. Finish one task well today and tell no one about it, not even sideways.
