Work without checking the mirror
Doing good work in private is a start.
Key takeaways
- Set the standard before anyone walks in
- Finish the task without scanning for a reaction
- Measure the work against the work, not the room
TL;DR
Doing good work in private is a start. The next step is doing it without stopping every few minutes to check how you're coming across.
Stay inside the task
There's a habit most men never notice. Mid-task, the mind steps out of the body and looks back at itself. How does this look. Would anyone be impressed. Am I the kind of guy who does this. The work slows, because half of you left.
Catch the step outside
It happens in the ordinary stuff. Washing dishes and suddenly narrating your own diligence. Lifting something heavy and imagining how it reads. Fixing the thing in the garage while a tiny jury scores your form. Nobody's in the room and you've still built an audience out of nothing. That's exhausting work on top of the actual work, and you're paying for both.

Finish without the replay
Here's the test. When you set the tool down, do you move to the next thing, or do you stand there a second running the tape? The replay feels like reflection. It's a search for a verdict. You already know whether the job got done right. You don't need to watch yourself do it to be sure you existed. Put the tool away, look at what's next, go.
Let the work be the work
Good work has a shape of its own. Square or crooked. Done or not. The question of whether you're admirable while doing it is a different question, and it has never once made a cut straighter. Separate them. One belongs to your hands. The other you can set down entirely, which is better news than it sounds.
Today
Pick one task today and when you notice yourself stepping outside it to watch, say the task's next step out loud and get back in.
Go deeper
The constant self-audit runs on a real fear, that your standing depends on the quality of the footage. Scripture takes that job off your hands. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1. Justified is a finished verdict, not a running tally. Which means the mirror check isn't just tiring, it's redundant. You can't improve a settled account by watching yourself behave well. So work. Let the standing stand, and give your hands the whole of your attention.
Remember Yesterday
Keep working with no audience. Find the part of today's work nobody will ever inspect and do it to the same standard as the part they will.
Remember Lasterday
Say nothing when they don't. Finish one task well today and tell no one about it, not even sideways.
Keep exploring
Stop needing the credit. Do one useful thing today, then let the whole day pass without mentioning it to anyone.
Tomorrow's memo, every morning
One a day. No noise.
