Plan the date yourself

Asking "what do you want to do?" every time is not generosity.

Key takeaways

  • Pick the place and time before you ask her
  • Arrange the ride, sitter, or schedule without being reminded
  • Put it on the calendar tonight, not someday

TL;DR

Asking "what do you want to do?" every time is not generosity. It's handing her one more job and calling it kindness.

Make the call yourself

Most people drift into the easy pattern. Somebody decides, somebody goes along, and if nobody decides, the night gets eaten by screens and leftovers. Usually the one deciding is tired of deciding.

Stop outsourcing the effort

There's a version of asking that's really just avoiding. If you never pick, you can never pick wrong. No bad restaurant on your record. No night that fell flat because of your call. That's a safe way to live and a thin way to love. Choosing badly and showing up is worth more than choosing nothing. She can tell the difference between a man who wants her company and a man who wants no blame.

Do the unglamorous parts

A plan is not a text that says we should do something sometime. A plan is a day, a time, a place, and whatever has to be handled so the two of you can actually walk out the door. The reservation. The childcare. The shift you move. Nobody writes songs about calling a sitter. Do it anyway. The romance is in the fact that you handled the boring part so she didn't have to.

Pay attention to her

You've been told what she likes. Probably more than once. The cafe she mentioned, the walk she keeps bringing up, the thing she stopped asking for because asking got old. Use that. A plan built from what she actually said beats a grand gesture built from what you'd enjoy.

Today

Pick a day, a time, and a place, handle whatever has to be arranged, and tell her it's set.

Go deeper

Effort toward her isn't decoration on top of love. It is love, doing something. Let us not love in word, neither in tongue. but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:18) Deed means somebody made a decision and paid for it in time and trouble. A planned evening is small, but it's real, and real is what she can hold. Being sanctified is partly this: becoming a man whose care shows up on a calendar instead of staying in his head.

Remember Lasterday

Walk after dinner. After dinner tonight, put your shoes on and walk for twenty minutes before you sit down.

Write tomorrow's first step. Tonight before you get in bed, write one sentence naming tomorrow's first step and leave it where you'll see it.
