Drink water before coffee

Most of the tired you feel by mid afternoon isn't a character flaw or a sleep problem.

Key takeaways

  • Fill a glass tonight and leave it by the sink
  • Drink it before the first cup tomorrow
  • Keep a bottle where you actually sit all day

TL;DR

Most of the tired you feel by mid afternoon isn't a character flaw or a sleep problem. You're dry. You've been dry since you woke up.

Fix the easy thing first

You'll chase it with caffeine, then sugar, then a short temper. Cheapest fix on the list and you keep skipping it.

Count what you actually drink

Run the tape on yesterday. Coffee. Maybe a soda. Whatever was in the fridge at dinner. Somewhere in there, almost no water. Then you wonder why your head aches at four o'clock and why the smallest thing sets you off. Dehydration looks exactly like a bad mood. It also looks like hunger, which is why you ate twice at night and didn't need either one.

Put it where you sit

Willpower isn't the problem. Distance is. If the water is in the kitchen and you're in the truck or at a desk or on a ladder, you won't go get it. Put a bottle within arm's reach of wherever you spend the day. Fill it when you walk past a tap. No app, no tracker, no schedule. Just a full container in the place your hand already goes.

Stop blaming bigger things

A man will overhaul his whole routine before he'll do the small obvious thing. New program, new supplement, new sleep theory. Meanwhile the simplest input is missing. Do the cheap thing first for a week and see what's left of the complaint. Usually less than you expected. Then you'll know what the real problem is instead of guessing.

Today

Drink a full glass of water before your first cup of coffee tomorrow morning.

Go deeper

Scripture never treats your body as scrap material you drag around until the real life starts. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own (1 Corinthians 6:19). Temple is not a compliment about how you look. It's a statement about who's living there. The body you're going to be raised in is the one you're neglecting now, and the same God who intends to glorify it asked you to take basic care of it in the meantime. That care is unglamorous. Water, sleep, a meal that isn't from a bag. None of it earns you anything. All of it is honest stewardship of something handed to you. Start with the glass.

Eat at the table. Name one meal this week, tell your family the time, and be sitting there first.
