Keep the word you gave

A word is a small thing to break and an expensive one to rebuild.

Key takeaways

  • Do the one promise you have quietly been sliding
  • Give the exact hour instead of a vague someday
  • Say the true no while it is still cheap

TL;DR

A word is a small thing to break and an expensive one to rebuild. Every promise a man makes is a beam he is laying across empty space, and someone will eventually stand on it. Say a thing enough times without meaning it and the beams stop holding weight.

Mean the word you give

People stop stepping out onto them. They learn to work around the man instead of with him, and they never tell him why.

Stop the easy yes

At work, some of us say yes to the deadline because no is uncomfortable in the moment. The moment passes. The deadline does not. A man learns that agreeing was easier than delivering, and the gap between the two becomes his reputation whether he watches it grow or not.

With money, a man promises himself the payment will happen and then quietly moves it. The promise was to nobody, so nobody noticed. Except him. He noticed. That is the trouble with a word given only to yourself. You are the one person you cannot fire.

Stop paying in fog

In friendship, some of us keep the peace by never landing anywhere. We say maybe when we mean no. We say soon when we mean never. It feels like kindness. It is really a small theft, taking a friend's planning and his trust and paying him back in fog.

At home, a man says he will handle it and hopes handling it will feel more possible later. When later comes he handles it or he does not, and the people who live with him are keeping a ledger he pretends not to see. Children especially. They believe every word until they are taught not to, and then they stop asking.

The cost hides under all of it. A man who bends his word to keep the room comfortable is buying approval with promises he does not intend to fund. The bill lands on the person who believed him.

Start smaller than it feels

So start smaller than feels worth it. Say the true no while it is still cheap. Give the exact hour instead of the vague someday. When you commit, commit out loud, and then let the doing catch up to the saying rather than the other way around. This is unglamorous and slow. No one throws a party for a man who simply did what he said.

But the beams begin to hold. People step out onto your word without testing it first. And a man who can be leaned on has become rare enough to be needed everywhere.

Today

Pick one promise you have quietly been sliding and either do it today or tell the person plainly that you will not.

Go deeper

The road runs further than one honest week. A man spends years learning to mean what he says, and the final country is a place where his word and his life are the same object. Jesus stripped it down to nothing more than "yes or no," warning that anything beyond that comes from the evil one, and Matthew 5:37 makes plain that a plain word is the aim. There is a home where the One who keeps every promise says well done. Every kept word now is a rehearsal for standing before Him with nothing to hide and nothing to retract.

Remember Yesterday

Say the true sentence. Name one thing you are angry about in a single plain sentence, out loud to the person involved or written down if there is no one to tell.

Read it

Remember Lasterday

Say the thing you want. Name one real want out loud today, in plain words, to the person who can actually answer it.
