Build past comfort
Nothing worth having gets built by the part of you that wants to sit down.
Key takeaways
- Do the plain thing you have been dressing up as complicated
- Pick the brick back up after the small failure today
- Keep the promise no one would notice you breaking
TL;DR
Nothing worth having gets built by the part of you that wants to sit down. Comfort has good taste and no skill. It knows exactly what feels right and nothing about what lasts. A life put up by comfort looks fine for a while, then you notice the walls do not meet at the corners.
Skip what comfort would skip
The building happens on the ordinary day. Not the day you feel ready. The plain Tuesday when nothing is at stake and no one is watching is the day the real structure goes up or does not.
Stop waiting for inspiration
A man who only trains when he is inspired has no body to speak of. A man who only tells the truth when it is safe has told very little truth.
Some of us have a whole life of intentions and a very short list of things actually made, because we kept waiting for the day that never comes.
Pick the brick up
Most men quit early. Not at the big failure. At the small one. He misses the workout, eats the thing, says the soft lie to keep the room calm, checks the phone instead of doing the work. Then a voice says, well, the day is ruined, might as well. That voice is comfort wearing a robe, pretending to be wisdom. It wants you to believe that one dropped brick means you tear down the wall.
You do not. You pick the brick back up.
The ordinary day is not ruined by a stumble at ten in the morning. It is only ruined if the stumble becomes the theme. A man who begins again at noon has not failed, he has done the exact thing a life is built out of.
Build small today
If you have been waiting to feel solid before you act, understand that the solid feeling is a result, not a starting gun. It shows up after the reps, not before. The man who acts before he feels ready is the only kind of man who ever feels ready later.
So build small and build today.
Do the plain thing you have been dressing up as complicated. Say the true sentence you have been softening for a week. Keep the promise no one would notice you breaking. This is unglamorous work and it is the only work there is. Comfort will offer you a better day to start. There is no better day. There is this one, half spent, still standing, still yours to put another brick in.
Today
Lay the one brick you have been walking past, before the day is over.
Go deeper
God does not rush this. He works in the plain hours, the missed reps, the quiet restarts you think no one saw. The failing is not outside the making. It is part of how a man gets made, because a man who never falls never learns to get up, and getting up is most of the skill. And He starts small. Jesus said that "whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much," in Luke 16:10, which means the ordinary day is the proving ground. Be patient with the slow build. The unfinished man is exactly the man He is working on.
Remember Yesterday
Start before you feel ready. Take the one thing you have been calling not-ready and do its smallest first step before you go to bed tonight.
Remember Lasterday
Do the boring maintenance. Pick the one small thing you've pushed past three times and do it before you sleep tonight.
Keep exploring
Do it badly on purpose. Pick the thing that has sat longest, set a timer for twenty minutes, and do a deliberately rough version.
