Bring your body down on purpose

The day ends but you don't.

Key takeaways

  • Park the car, sit still, count ten slow breaths
  • Wash the dishes by hand with the radio off
  • Set the phone on the counter and leave it

TL;DR

The day ends but you don't. Your body is still running the engine at highway speed in the driveway, and you call that normal.

Slow one ordinary task

You don't need a program for this. You need one ordinary thing done slowly, on purpose, before the night gets away from you.

Notice the engine first

Jaw set. Shoulders up near your ears. Leg bouncing under the table while somebody talks to you. You're scanning the room for the next thing to handle even though nothing needs handling. That's not toughness, that's a body that forgot how to stop. Most men feed it more. Louder show, second drink, scroll until the eyes burn. All of it keeps the engine turning, just quieter. The revving doesn't end because you distracted it. It ends because you gave it something slow to do.

Pick one slow task

Tonight, choose something with your hands and no screen. Dishes. Sweeping. Folding a load of laundry on the bed. Do it at half the speed you normally would, and do it all the way to done. Warm water helps. Quiet helps more. Your mind will fight it and start listing tomorrow at you. Let it list. Keep your hands moving slow. Ten minutes in, your shoulders drop without permission. That's the whole trick, and it works because you stopped asking your body to sprint.

Stop borrowing tomorrow

The engine stays hot mostly because you keep loading it with things that haven't happened yet. The conversation Thursday. The bill on Friday. The thing you cannot fix from a couch at night. You can carry today. You cannot carry a week at once, and no man can.

Today

Before you sit down tonight, do one hands-on task at half speed all the way to finished.

Go deeper

There's an old line about this from a man who knew what a hunted body feels like. "He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul." (Psalm 23:2-3) Read it again. He makes him lie down. Nobody lies down on his own when he's wired. Something has to lead him there. If you believe God is good, then rest isn't a reward you earn at the end of a perfect day. It's given, and it's given to men who haven't finished. Take it tonight.

Set one porn rule. Write your one porn rule on paper tonight and say it out loud before you sleep.

Remember Lasterday

Aim desire at a person. Tonight when the pull comes, put the phone in another room and stay out there for ten minutes.

Do the boring maintenance. Pick the one small thing you've pushed past three times and do it before you sleep tonight.
